Joining CAPIC

CAPIC encourages Doctoral Academic Programs, Doctoral Internship Programs/Agencies, and Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs/Agencies to join CAPIC as Program Members.   Students register with CAPIC for online access but are not CAPIC members.

Membership Criteria

CAPIC has adapted the membership criteria for its Internship and Postdoctoral programs from those of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC).   Click on the program type below for its membership criteria:

One significant difference is that CAPIC encourages but does not require stipends for interns at its doctoral internship programs/agencies.  Also, CAPIC explicitly requires comprehensive cultural competency requirements.    See the comparison of APPIC and CAPIC Membership criteria.

Program members must also meet ongoing responsibilities, such as abiding by CAPIC policies and procedures, as a requirement for CAPIC membership. Compliance with these ongoing responsibilities is considered part of our Quality Assurance program, and a summary of these responsibilities is provided on the Quality Assurance page of our website.

To join CAPIC, in brief:

Please note our new policy for application/fee deadlines (see below)

  • A prospective program member reviews the appropriate membership criteria to see if they are able to meet CAPIC’s standards;
  • The prospective program then emails the CAPIC office (capicadmin@capic.net) to formally begin the application process;
  • The CAPIC office sets up an online application/profile, which the prospective program must complete online.
    • The prospective program also uploads supporting documentation and pays a $275 application fee;
  • The CAPIC office reviews the online application at our December and March Board meetings to assign to a Board member for review.
  • The board member reviews the online application, completes a site visit, works with the prospective member to address any concerns, and makes his/her recommendation to the Board.
  • Note CAPIC’s new policy: To participate in the online Match process and/or Clearinghouse/Post Clearinghouse, applications are due by the following deadlines:
    • To participate in the Match process: The office must receive the application and fees no later than August 1st,  to be reviewed at our December Board meeting.  Agencies of approved applications at the December Board meeting can participate in the Match process. (February)

      • Requests for these applications must be made no later than July 1st
      • Board members will review applications and perform site visits between the months of December and March prior to the March Board meeting
    • To participate in Clearinghouse/Post Clearinghouse: The office must receive the application and fees no later than December 1st, to be reviewed at our March Board meeting. Agencies of approved applications at the March Board meeting can participate in Clearinghouse and Post Clearinghouse (March and May).

      • Requests for these applications must be made no later than November 1st
      • Board members will review applications and perform site visits between the months of December and March prior to the March Board meeting
  • More details are involved.  See below.

Status Changes for Existing Members:

Existing program members who seek to upgrade their program status (e.g. add a Full-Time program or add a new training site) follow essentially the same procedures although no application fee is required and a site visit is left to the discretion of the CAPIC Board member conducting the review.

Students:

Please note that students themselves cannot become CAPIC program members, but they can gain access to the doctoral internship match process through their Doctoral Academic Program.   Students register with CAPIC for online access but are not CAPIC members.
